Biography

I have been a Lecturer since 2002 in Trent University and at NUIG. I am a qualified Secondary School Teacher of English as well. I have a BA in English Philology with University of Valladolid, Spain, H.Dip Education with University of Valladolid, Spain, MA Spanish (Translation Studies) with the National University of Ireland, Galway and obtained my Ph.D. in Language Teaching and Learning in 2013 with University of Valladolid, Spain.

I am the first year coordinator and language assistant coordinator in Spanish, NUIG.

Lately, my focus has been improving language  teaching and learning in the university classroom work through the exploration of space and time management. However, my maternity and unpaid leave from March 2015- January 2016 has diverted my attention a little. I'm catching up at the moment to be back on track. I am still creating materials to learn Spanish in a trilingual way - textbook, audio and video materials for the http://www.ndlr.ie/, under a creative commons licence for teaching and learning Spanish

I'm also currently working on Children Studies and Fiction issues, such as translation for kids, character voice and death in children literature.

At the moment, I'm carrying out research about the impact of space in language teaching and learning. I'm also more and moved involved in Language Learning and SpLDs in Higher Education. I try to write a teaching related blog: https://iteachthereforeithink.wordpress.com

Research Interests

I'm passionate about Language Teaching and Learning, mainly. My Ph.D. dissertation is on the use of classroom research tools for the language classroom at university level. Its case study enable student voice to be discussed with the current language teaching and learning literature and provided the tools for a continuous assessment of teaching by students. 

On the other hand, I am involved in the Children Studies degrees and I'm interested in the translation of children fiction and the treatment ofof taboo topics in these texts.

I'm also actively creating materials under creative commons licence to explore issues on creativity in language teaching and learning as well as the development of plurilingual materials.

Pilar Alderete and Owen Harrington Fernández (2016) This symposium seeks to explore the role of literary translation with regard to canon formation in the context of modern and contemporary Iberia, with special focus on aspects such as the competing interests of academic, educational and publishing norms; translation policy, subventions and patronage; dissemination, marketing and reception; and new approaches to the phenomenon of re-translation. It aims to facilitate a space for discussion of the ways in which literary translation may contribute to the (re)construction and/or consolidation of a canon by looking at developments such as the recent English translations of classics from the different languages of the Iberian Peninsula and the consolidation of new publishing houses such as Hispabooks, a Spanish press that publishes fiction from Iberia in English translation. The symposium also sets out to examine the negotiation and reframing of shifting and competing notions of identity through translation both into and out of the different. Teaching Interests

I have always been enthusiastic about language learning and teaching. Fortunately, I started to teach
Spanish at a university a year after I graduated and I have been able to continue teaching at the same level
for the last seven years. During this period, my approach to language teaching has shifted from a rigid syllabus
and goals predetermined by the department or previous practice -textbook grammar revision, drills,
comprehension, compositions, short translations- , to a more flexible syllabus and cooperative ways of
teaching inside of the classroom -role plays, language anxiety workshops, interviews, inductive grammar,
story-telling, vocabulary building exercises, monitored internet exercises-. My approach has expanded from
a more textual perspective to a more balanced approach between the writing/reading and the speaking/listening
skills. My first years in language teaching witnessed grammatically based routines which developed
into more communicative task-based methodologies, including the development of language awareness
and language learning strategies; through questionnaires, interviews, summaries, debates on strategies and
transferable skills.
