Biography


My research primarily focuses on the archaeology and history of Italy, especially during the first millennium BC. I am presently completing a monograph on gender and social identities in Archaic Etruria, the subject of my doctoral dissertation. It addresses the construction of male identity and the display of hegemonic masculinities in particular. I was awarded a Royal Irish Academy Mobility Grant  in 2014 to undertake library research for this at the British School at Rome, and in April-May 2016 I held a scholarship at the Fondation Hardt in Switzerland for further research on this topic.

I am also an active field archaeologist having worked with a number of projects in Ireland and the Mediterranean. I am presently working with two expeditions in Italy: I have worked with the Poggio Civitate Excavation Project since 2009, where recently I have been overseeing the excavation of a Hellenistic Etruscan settlement in Vescovado di Murlo (Prov. di Siena). Additionally, I am the site director for Brock University's excavation of a Romano-Punic sanctuary on Pantelleria (Prov. di Trapini), a volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily. 

Together with Edward Herring, I co-organised the Seventh Conference of Italian Archaeology at NUI Galway in in April 2016. The meeting attracted nearly 200 delegates from around the world and 150 presentations were delivered over three days.
